Camping in the San Juan Mountains
This was by far one of our favorite camping trips to date…and it almost didn’t even happen.
This past year has been plagued with all kinds of travel woes for us. We’ve had flights canceled by bomb cyclones, international trips re-worked at the last minute due to earthquakes, and road trip dreams squashed by blown heater cores. Needless to say, we were really needing a getaway to go off without a hitch.
We (and by “we” I really mean my amazingly gifted trip planning wife, Jessie) began planning a summer camping trip with all our fingers and toes crossed that it might actually work out. However, as our dates got closer and closer, we still hadn’t fully decided on a location and were starting to feel as if we might need to re-schedule. About a week before our trip dates, Jessie came to me with a wonderful plan all laid out. She had campsites picked, sites to see, little towns to visit, and even a nights stay in a cool hotel for a change of pace at the end of the trip. There was only one “little” problem…the 16 hour drive that would need to be done in one day to get there…This trip would mean spending 32+ hours round trip just sitting in the car, which just didn’t feel right. So, with very little time left, it was back to the drawing board.
With only three days left before the dates we had off work and no feasible trip in place, it was looking as if our travel curse was about to claim another trip from us. But at the last minute, Jessie had an incredible recommendation to check out Molas Lake in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Some quick research was done and it looked absolutely perfect! We decided to go for it and just make something happen. The following photographs are evidence of an incredibly successful trip, one that we will never forget.
